In the days of the internet and ever-reaching television exposure, what better place to go for a unique date night than the theater? What will you see? Well, a musical-comedy about reality TV… Wait, we want to escape TV, right? Wrong!
Whether you love or hate the concept of “reality” that holds an overwhelming influence on our channel selections, Nobody Loves You will have you roaring with laughter as it expertly exposes all the cliches and stereotypes of the very TV format it mocks. I will be the first to admit that I am a reality TV junkie.
I don’t care how fake or manufactured the drama is, it’s hilariously entertaining. Nobody Loves You centers around the cast of a show that is part The Bachelor, part Survivor, and all around madness. All the archetypes we watch reality shows for are present: the cynical guy, the uptight girl, the drunk party chick, the moron, the Bible-thumper, the charming but shrewd host, and, of course, overzealous fans.
Nothing I saw was new in and of itself, but that’s what made it so fantastic. These characters and scenarios seem so absurd and nonsensical on stage, but these exact things and people are present on EVERY reality show! It’s fast paced, in-your-face comedy, filled with witty sarcasm and commentary, perfectly timed and occasionally over-the-top musical numbers, and a cast that truly pulls you in. No joke, I started to feel like I was watching an actual reality TV show taping.
Who better to see a comedy based on romance-reality TV with than your main squeeze? That’s exactly what I did. My man has sat by my side for many an episode of reality programming, and we had a blast watching it all be ripped to pieces. The Horizon Theatre was the perfect stage for this type of musical-comedy. You’ll find yourself so close-up to the insanity that is reality-TV-romance, that you will truly appreciate the actual, likely more stable, reality sitting beside you!
Get to the area early, and let yourselves be drawn into the eclectic wonderlands of Little 5 Points (L5P for those in the know) and Inman Park. Grab a bite to eat in one of the area’s unique restaurants, and appreciate the local artwork and boutiques. Or, you can do like we did, and let your appetite build for a lovely after-show meal. No worries, the Horizon has plenty of concessions to quell your stomach in the mean time.
Oddly enough, the show is as on-the-nose about the cliches as it is about the fact that even in this topsy-turvy “reality”, true connections, no matter how strange, can be made. Prepare to laugh so hard that you cry, all within the intimate and charming venue known as the Horizon Theatre.
Nobody Loves You was a smash hit Off-Broadway up in NYC, and now we Atlantans get to see what all the buzz is about. No less, in its first run outside of the Big Apple! Everyone in Atlanta knows about the Fox, and how “fabulous” it is. That is true, but the Horizon Theatre gave me better views, unique atmosphere, and prices that don’t require breaking my carefully planned out budget. Nobody Loves You is by far of the funniest performances we’ve seen in some time, including TV, film, or on stage. Grab your boo, buy your tickets, and prepare for a fun-filled date night at the Horizon Theatre. Hurry it up, though, since you only have until April 30th to catch this outrageous musical!
